Q: What do professional pet sitters do?
In a nutshell, pet sitters visit pets where they are most comfortable – at home. The average length of a visit is 30 minutes and the number of visits per day is determined by what you feel your pet needs. Most sitters do have policies regarding indoor dogs. Please check with your Sitter regarding this or any other policy.
Q: Why should I use a professional pet sitter?
• Less stress, for you and your pet. Your pet gets to stay where they are most comfortable – at home. You don’t have to arrange care with busy neighbors or family.
• Your pet gets to keep to his current feeding and walk routine.
• Your pet receives individual attention, play and TLC at each visit.
• Your home doesn’t look vacant. A sitter will pick up your mail and newspaper each day and put your garbage out for pick up. They can also alternate lights and adjust curtains so your home looks occupied.
• A professional pet sitter will be bonded and insured for your peace of mind.
• Hiring a professional pet sitter is an affordable luxury, especially if you have more than one pet. Most services’ rates are very competitive with boarding facilities.
• Special services, such as a trip to the Vet or the groomer can be arranged with most sitters with advance notice. Some sitters offer taxi service whether you are traveling or simply short on time, and some offer overnight stays as well.
Q: I’m traveling soon. How do I go about hiring a pet sitter?
You should begin calling pet sitters as soon as you know you will be traveling. Most sitters book reservations far in advance, especially for holidays. If you’re traveling on a major holiday, booking 2-3 months in advance is a smart move. If your pet has any medications or special needs, be sure to tell the sitter about them during this first conversation. All professional sitters will require an in-home consultation before you leave to get acquainted with you and your pet and to fill out necessary paperwork regarding the care of your pet and your home. Before your consultation, it’s helpful to gather the following information:
• Details about your pet’s daily routine, favorite treats/toys, hiding places, medical history, etc…
• Your pet’s Veterinarian’s phone number, and the names and dosages of any medications.
• Your itinerary, including hotel and phone numbers.
• An emergency contact name and phone number.
• The name and phone number of a nearby neighbor who you trust.
• The names and phone numbers of anyone with permission to enter your home while you are away.
• The name and phone number of your security company.
• Be ready to provide a house key to your Sitter.
Q: Is there anything special I should do before I leave?
Your Sitter will contact you shortly before you leave to confirm the booking. If there’s been any changes to your pet’s routine be sure to mention it. There are a few things that can help your Sitter take care of necessities as quickly as possible, leaving more time for attention to your pet:
• Stock up on pet food, cat litter, any necessary medications and any favorite treats for your pet.
• Be sure to leave out paper towels, leashes, bowls, can opener and cleaning products.
• Leave everything in a central, easy to find location.
